  1. Wow, what an incredibly helpful article. In the past few years, I’ve become a huge fan of spoken word, but I’ve never had a chance to attend a live event. Thank goodness for YouTube and Indiefeed Performance Poetry! I have wondered whether I could perform in front of a live audience, and while I’m still not sure performing is right for me, I will definitely keep this article so I can share it and refer back to it.

  2. P.S. I loved seeing the photograph of the Bowery Poetry Club. If I ever get to New York, that’s my key destination! Also, I loved the poem by Suheir Hammad. Thanks for sharing that.

Thanks, Melissa. Yes, isn’t that a great picture? Check out an untrained eye on flickr. He’s got some great pics. And I also love Hammad’s poem. I love especially when she stops reading and starts doing the piece by memory. It’s a fantastic example of how effective a conversational style is.

Anyway, I’m so glad the article was helpful to you. I do hope you have an opportunity to attend a live event some time in the near future. When I attend poetry events, I feel this tremendous urge to share my poetry, and I think that’s a common feeling. So, watch out. If you see live spoken word, you might just find yourself spittin’ a poem!

    Thanks for dropping by!

  6. Wow!! First off, I appreciate you taking the time to give advice on people who are interested in doing spoken word. I am one of them. I was just researching to see Spoken Word, and I came across your website. These 11 tips I read thoroughly is truly helpful! I wrote all 11 steps down. I have my own blog site with my poetry on it. Recently, I’ve been taking my poetry more serious and wanted to try spoken word. I know I am not good with public speaking. Were you a shy person or even nervous when you started doing spoken word? If so, how did you get over that nervousness? I really enjoyed this because it was interesting to read and beneficial. Also, I liked how you showed two different styles of spoken word.

Thanks, Arabia! I’m so happy that you found this article useful.

As for my own experience, I’m not precisely shy, but I’m a bit of an introvert, and I’m always nervous right before I perform. The way I deal with nerves is to be super-prepared. I rehearse a lot. Because of my prep, my pieces tend to be second nature to me. That way I can enjoy the experience and not worry about forgetting my lines or gestures.

Also, simply gaining as much experience as possible will help a lot. My advice to you is to simply start by reading your work at open mics. Try to do this as often as possible until you get comfortable speaking in front of audiences. When you think you’re finally ready, then try memorizing a piece and performing it. Before you know it, your nerves will drop away and you’ll simply be enjoying the experience.

Good public speaking is simply a matter of experience and confidence. You can nurture confidence, and you get experience simply by doing it. So, really, all the skills you need are attainable.

Good luck, and go get ‘em!

Thank you for the tips. I am more of an introvert, myself. I am suppose to do my first open mic next month but wasn’t sure if I should have it memorize or not. But I will definitely take your advice. Once I am ready, i will eventually start memorizing it. But like you mentioned in your article, I might start off visiting different places before I jump into doing my open mic.

Thanks again for the advice. You give good tips. :-) .
I will do a follow up and update you with my progress.
