Love the old pic – you certainly had the ‘look’ of a serious poet back then ;)

One thing is missing from your post: video clip of Ami performing her poetry! Share your performances with the big old world wide web. I bet you’ll find new fans!

Thanks, Ami! It’s interesting that you would mention including one of my vids. I actually considered it for this post and just gave my Youtube link instead. I’ll figure out how to get more of my creative stuff on the site…as soon as I stop writing my ass off, trying to keep up with regular posts! ha!

well – you showed me. I’m Captain Obvious, and when you don’t make stuff obvious, sometimes (often!) I miss it. Followed the link and checked out some of your vids – WOW! great stuff on your page. Loved the performance of your anti-love poem and the smoking poem, love the modern humor. keep it up! (how long does it take from idea to writing to performance?)

Thanks, Captain! You’re very kind. Hmm…I’ve never thought about how long it takes from idea to actual performance-ready piece. I suppose it depends on how long it really takes to write the piece. Some performance pieces just happen really quickly and others take a long time to brew. When I start writing a performance piece, I usually know it; so, the development of the performance starts happening with the writing…if that makes sense. Anyway, very interesting question. I’ll have to think about it some more. Thanks again!

  2. Ami, this is an excellent post, thoughtful and offering great suggestions.

I, too, liked seeing that pic. I’ll pop over to YouTube when I get the chance (I’m just back from NYC and still catching up).

Thanks, Maureen! I know how it is when you return home from a trip…everything feels so out of sorts and kinda hectic! Good luck!

  3. I love this article and it really inspires me to look and maybe check out some open mics in my area. I’ve seen a few spoken word poets and always felt so intimidated of performing my own poetry since it’s a style different from my own (although I definitely tried a spoken word style for awhile).

Thanks for writing this and I really, really enjoyed watching your performance of “Unspoken Word”!

Thanks so much, Brittany! I’m so glad that you enjoyed the article and the performance!

I definitely encourage you to check out some open mics. You might be surprised by how much fun they can be. Also, I encourage you to find your own unique performance/reading style. While certain performance styles have come to be associated with spoken word, there is no one “spoken word style.” Not really. So read or perform poetry, be yourself, and shine!

  4. Very well written, I suck at performance poetry so this was very helpful.

Thanks, Melanie. So glad you found the article useful in some way. And I’m sure you don’t suck at performing/reading your poetry. It’s just a matter of finding your own voice and style.

  5. Excellent article, I’m a great believer in the value of performing poetry. I used to try to memorise my poetry but that just made my nerves much worse and I now always have the book in front of me though I look at the audience a lot. I now suffer much less from nerves and its all become muc more fun!

Thanks! I’m glad you found the article useful. It’s wonderful that you’ve discovered your own style of presenting your poetry. That’s exactly what this article is about–finding unique and comfortable ways to perform your own work. Good luck and keep performing!

    Do people do this professionally?

    Ami Mattison Reply:

Yes, John, I perform spoken word professionally. I’ve been touring around the US and Canada for nine years. It’s challenging, rewarding, fulfilling and fun “work.” I love it!
