This was an EXCELLENT posting! These are things that most of us who feature already know…but to have it laid out and in writing is very helpful. I’ll be forwarding this along. Great job, Theresa!

Thank you, Wally! I’m so glad you enjoyed my article. It’s definitely intended towards first-time feature performers, but it’s nice to know that pros find it useful as well. And thanks for passing it along! Keep rockin’ the mic!

  4. Hey Mattison,

Excellent post… You know I actually read a lot of my stuff off page, but practice and a solid set list is still so important.

Even poets who do “readings” vs “performances” can still honor the performative art of their work. A great reader can makes the paper disappear, while a poor reader makes the audience disappear.

Ryka, my friend! As usual, you make me laugh with your pithy insights! I have another article “4 Reasons to Perform Your Poetry,” which suggests that poetry can be “performed” whether it is read or memorized. And your performances are great examples of what can happen when the choice and challenge to read is emotively asserted.

Perhaps, in a future article, I can share with my readers some of your writings and performances. Until then, thanks for stopping by and sharing a little experienced wisdom! xx

Thank you, Tyree! It makes me happy that you found the advice useful. Be sure to use all that nervousness for the great positive energy that it can be! Good luck with your feature!
